In 1968, Star Trek aired the first interracial kiss on a TV drama. Captain Kirk and Uhura were under the control of telekinetic aliens and spent the whole scene unsuccessfully trying to resist and talking about how scared they were.
In the clip below, actress Nichelle Nichols talks about her experience filming the scene, including an incredibly uncomfortable director who didn’t want to do the scene, network execs observing the shoot, her unfair treatment during discussions over how the scene should be done, and William Shatner’s intentional sabotage of the no-kiss take.
